Electric cars of the future could be charged as fast as filling tank

AUTOSHOW-TOKYO/(Image for representation) Toyota's Ultra Compact BEV (battery electric vehicle) and the Ultra Compact BEV Concept for Business (L) are displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show, in Tokyo | Reuters
US scientists have claimed a major technological breakthrough that could resolve one of the key concerns surrounding all-electric vehicles —add up to 200 miles of range in 10 minutes to compete with petroleum-fueled internal combustion engines.
Current generation vehicles are not capable of this feat as it risks the lithium plating, the formation of metallic lithium around the anode, which would severely deteriorate battery life. New generation Tesla vehicles require about 30 minutes for a partial charge.
To get around this constraint, the researchers raised the temperature of their experimental battery to 60 degrees Celsius during the charge cycle, then lowered it back down as it was used.
Researchers at the Pennsylvania State University said the new method just needs ten minutes charging time to add 200 miles of driving range. To achieve this, the battery should rapidly take in 400 kilowatts of energy.
What this does is "limit the battery's exposure to the elevated charge temperature, thus generating a very long cycle life," said senior author Chao-Yang Wang, a mechanical engineer at The Pennsylvania State University.
But scaling up the design and bringing it to market may take a decade, Rick Sachleben, a member of the American Chemical Society said.
Makers will need to make sure that rapidly raising the temperature is safe and stable, and doesn't lead to explosions given the phenomenal amount of energy that is being transferred.
"Fast charging is one of the holy grails of electric vehicles," he said. "It's one of the things that is necessary for them to compete with petroleum-fueled internal combustion engines."
This was reported in the journal Joule on Wednesday.

'Smart' light bulbs may be used to hack personal info: Study

filament-bulb-infrared-lamp-light-red-shutInfrared lamp | Shutterstock
Infrared-enabled 'smart' light bulbs may be used by hackers to either steal data or spoof other connected devices on the home Wi-Fi network, according to Indian-origin scientists in the US.
The researchers at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) conducted a review of the security holes that exist in popular smart-light brands.
Smart lighting technology involves high efficiency fixtures and automated controls that make adjustments based on conditions such as occupancy or daylight availability.
"Your smart bulb could come equipped with infrared capabilities, and most users don't know that the invisible wave spectrum can be controlled," said Murtuza Jadliwala, a professor at UTSA.
"You can misuse those lights. Any data can be stolen: texts or images. Anything that is stored in a computer," said Jadliwala.
Some smart bulbs connect to a home network without needing a smart home hub, a centralised hardware or software device where other internet of things (IoT) products communicate with each other.
Smart home hubs, which connect either locally or to the cloud, are useful for IoT devices that use the Zigbee or Z-Wave protocols or Bluetooth, rather than Wi-Fi, said Anindya Maiti from UTSA, co-author of the study published in the journal Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies.
If these same bulbs are also infrared-enabled, hackers can send commands via the infrared invisible light emanated from the bulbs to either steal data or spoof other connected IoT devices on the home network, according to the researchers.
The owner might not know about the hack because the hacking commands are communicated within the owner's home Wi-Fi network, without using the internet, they said.
"Think of the bulb as another computer. These bulbs are now poised to become a much more attractive target for exploitation even though they have very simple chips," said Jadliwala.
Jadliwala recommends that consumers opt for bulbs that come with a smart home hub rather than those that connect directly to other devices.
He also recommends that manufacturers do a better job in developing security measures to limit the level of access that these bulbs have to other smart home appliances or electronics within a home.

Microsoft wins Pentagon’s $10 billion cloud computing deal

Pentagon-Cloud Contract
Microsoft has been awarded a USD 10 billion cloud computing contract called Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure Cloud (JEDI) by the Pentagon.
The contentious bidding process for the contract for JEDI, intended to improve military’s cloud computing systems, pitted Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle, among others, against one another.
Microsoft’s win has surprised many as Amazon was considered a frontrunner for the deal since it had built cloud services for the Central Intelligence Agency.
The resulting system will store and process vast amounts of classified data, allowing the US military to use artificial intelligence to speed up its war planning and fighting capabilities.
Bidding for the huge government contract has attracted more attention than usual, sparked by speculation early in the process that Amazon would be awarded the deal. Tech giants Oracle and IBM pushed back with their own bids. Oracle also challenged the bid process in federal court, but lost .
The Department of Defence emphasized in an announcement that the process was fair and followed procurement guidelines.
Over the last year, Microsoft has positioned itself as a friend to the US military. Microsoft  President Bradford Lee Smith wrote last fall that Microsoft has long supplied technology to the military and would continue to do so, despite pushback from employees.
Microsoft, Amazon, Google and other tech giants have faced criticism from their own employees about doing business with the government, especially on military and immigration related projects.
Microsoft and Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nissan plans to cut over 10,000 jobs worldwide: Report

Nissan plans to cut over 10,000 jobs worldwide: ReportRepresentative image | Reuters
Automobile major Nissan Motor Corporation Ltd plans to cut more than 10,000 jobs worldwide, Japanese news agency Kyodo reported quoting sources in direct knowledge of the matter. The car giant's profit has been plunging while the company still grapples with management upheaval after the arrest of its former chief Carlos Ghosn over financial misconduct.
The new decision comes after Nissan announced in May that it would trim 4,800 posts from its global workforce of around 139,000. The Japanese major's move reflects the firm's struggles in the wake of the arrest of Carlos Ghosn and a fall in sales in the United States and Europe.
The cuts are expected to be mostly at factories overseas with low utilisation rates and the final decision will be announced along with the financial results on Thursday, reported Kyodo.
Analysts expect Nissan to post one of its weakest quarterly performances since the 2008 global financial crisis when it announces its first-quarter earnings on Thursday.
Nissan has been struggling to improve dismal profit margins in the United States, a key market where former Chairman Carlos Ghosn for years pushed to aggressively grow market share during his time as chief executive.
Years of heavy discounting to grow sales in the US—world’s second-biggest auto market—have left Nissan with falling demand for the Altima sedan and other models, a cheapened brand image and low resale values, while the costs to offer high discounts have hit its bottom line.
Renault owns 43 per cent of the Japanese automaker, which in turn holds a 15 per cent, non-voting stake in its partner. Saikawa, who has sought more equal footing with Renault, last month said Nissan would postpone discussions on the alliance’s future to prioritise performance.
The latest job cuts also highlight the extent of problems facing Chief Executive Hiroto Saikawa, who is also grappling with fractured relations with French alliance partner Renault SA following the arrest of their shared former chairman.
In May, Nissan reported net profits for the fiscal year to March of 319 billion yen ($2.9 billion)—the lowest amount since 2009-10 when the company was struggling in the wake of the global financial crisis.
It was a decline of 57 percent from the previous fiscal year and the profit outlook for the current fiscal year was forecast to be even worse, at 170 billion yen.

Netflix announces mobile-only plan in India for Rs 199

netflix-rep
Netflix has finally announced its cheapest streaming plan for the Indian market: A Rs 199 monthly plan for mobile app users only. Announced at the Netflix House in Delhi, the plan will offer Standard Definition (SD) content at Rs 199 a month and will be the company's cheapest offering in India.
Netflix announced the plan with a video ad titled ‘Netflix, now in your pocket’, which promises the entire range of Netflix original and syndicated content in your pocket.
Earlier reports that Netflix would be announcing cheaper plans in India had predicted a price point of Rs 250. The announced price is even cheaper, putting Netflix in between Amazon Prime video and Hotstar in terms of pricing. For comparison, Netflix competitors Hotstar and Amazon Prime have monthly plans starting at Rs 299 and Rs 129. However, in terms of annual plans, Amazon and Hotstar offer cheaper plans than Netflix with Rs 999/year and Rs 365/year starting price points.
Currently, Netflix offers three plans: A Rs 499 ‘Basic’ plan for one device, a Rs 649 ‘Standard plan’ for up to two devices and with HD-support, and a Rs 799 ‘premium’ plan with HD, Ultra-HD and support for up to four devices.
Unlike the Standard plan, the new mobile plan will not support casting. This means that you cannot use it on a mobile phone and then ‘share’ the screen to a larger display like a connected TV.
Existing Netflix users can shift to the new plan by clicking on the ‘Change Plan’ option in their settings.
The change in pricing comes as Netflix reported a loss in users in the United States for the first time in a decade, coupled with a slower rate of growth worldwide than anticipated in the second quarter. Netflix had earlier raised the price of its streaming service for US subscribers from $10.99 to $12.99 .
Against announcements that Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) had lost 130,000 US-based subscribers by the end of its second quarter, the company's share price dropped.
According to a report by Bangalore-based management consultancy Redseer, Netflix had 11 million subscribers in India. Its closest rival was Amazon Prime Video, with 13 million subscribers. Hotstar led the trio with over 200 million subscribers in India. The company hopes to add seven million paid subscribers in its third quarter this year.

Amazon to launch an ad-supported free music streaming service soon

Reports suggests that Amazon has initially offered to pay some record labels per stream and if all goes well Amazon could introduce the service as early as next week.

Amazon Prime Music

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amazon offers Prime Music as a part of its Prime subscription service.
  • Amazon is planning to introduce a free version of Prime Music.
  • Amazon could offer its free music service via its Echo smart speakers.
Up until now music lovers could access Amazon's vast library of songs only by subscribing to paid subscription service. The Seattle-headquartered company offered its music subscription service -- the Amazon Prime Music - as a part of its Prime subscription, which costs Rs 129 a month or Rs 999 a year in India. But that might be about to change as new reports suggest that Amazon might launch a free version of its music streaming service soon.
According to a Billboard report, Amazon is in talks with music labels to introduce an ad-supported free version of Prime Music soon. The company is likely to offer its free music service via its Echo range of smart speakers and it would offer a limited catalogue of music as a part of its free service.
The report further states that to faciliate its plans, Amazon has initially offered to pay some record labels per stream. This means that if all goes well, Amazon could introduce its free music streaming service in the US as early as next week - a move that is not only likely to intensify competition against other music streaming giants including Spotify, which boasts nearly 96 million paid subscribers and a total of 207 millions subscribers including the free users, and Apple Music, which has nearly 56 million paid users, but also provide a boost to its own streaming service and hardware sale.
Amazon hasn't commented on the matter yet. And we will have to wait and watch if the e-retail giant introduces a free-music service in its homeland and whether such a service makes its way to India.
Meanwhile, a report last week revealed that apart from Amazon's virtual digital assistant, Alexa, thousands of Amazon workers too get to listen to some of users' private conversation. As per an investigative report by Bloomberg, thousands of Amazon workers around the globe listen to users' private conversation in the name of improving Alexa's understanding of human speech. These workers, which includes a mix of full-time Amazon employees and contractual workers, share distressing and amusing recordings on the company's internal chatroom.

Facebook removing 687 pages linked to Congress ahead of polls: Report

Ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha Elections, Facebook will remove 687 pages and accounts related to the Congress party citing "coordinated inauthentic behaviour" on the social media platform.

Facebook removes 687 pages linked to Congress ahead of polls: Report
(Image for Representation)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Facebook cited coordinated inauthentic behaviour as reason for the removal
  • Facebook said that posts of the Congress included local news and criticism of political opponents
  • The removal of accounts was based on their behaviour, not the content they posted
Facebook Inc said on Monday it was removing 687 pages and accounts linked to India's main opposition Congress party, just days before voting begins in a general election, because of "coordinated inauthentic behaviour" on the social media platform.
The announcement marks a rare action from Facebook against a prominent political party in a country where it has more than 300 million users, the highest in the world.
Facebook said its investigation found that individuals used fake accounts and joined various groups to disseminate their content and increase engagement. Their posts included local news and criticism of political opponents such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Facebook said.
"While the people behind this activity attempted to conceal their identities, our review found that it was connected to individuals associated with an INC (Indian National Congress) IT Cell," Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cybersecurity Policy at Facebook, said in a statement.
Gleicher added that Facebook was removing accounts based on their behaviour, not the content they posted.
India's staggered election, scheduled to begin on April 11, will end on May 19.
Two of the samples shared by Facebook were of posts that criticized Modi's initiatives and called for supporting the Congress party and its president, Rahul Gandhi.
The social media giant also said it was removing 103 pages, groups and accounts, also for inauthentic behaviour, as part of a network which originated in Pakistan and was linked to employees of the Inter-Service Public Relations department of the Pakistani military.
Facebook has faced increasing pressure from authorities around the world, including the Indian government, to ensure its platform is not abused for political gains or to spread misinformation, especially ahead of elections.
Facebook has toughened up its rules governing political advertisements in India and many other countries to increase transparency.
Last week, Facebook removed a social media network in the Philippines and took the unusual step of linking it to a businessman who said he had managed the president's online election campaign in 2016. It has taken similar actions recently against accounts in Russia and Iran.
Separately, Facebook said it had also removed another 227 pages and 94 accounts in India for violating its policies against spam and misrepresentation.

WhatsApp adds Transgender emojis to its Android keyboard

WhatsApp

HIGHLIGHTS

  • WhatsApp is planning to add a transgender pride emoji to its keyboard.
  • The transgender pride flag is available in WhatsApp beta for Android.
  • WhatsApp is also planning to add more emojis to represent other genders.
Facebook-owned WhatApp is making a lot of changes to its platform. We already know that the popular social messaging app is planning to roll out a new feature on to its platform that would enable users to look for emojis and stickers when doodling images. And now, the word is the company is also planning to add a transgender pride flag and a bunch of other emojis to represent other genders.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, which tracks WhatsApp updates, the social messaging platform last month secretly added a trick that could be used to send the transgender pride emoji in the chat window. The feature, however, was only available to the users with WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.19.56 and newer.
But now, nearly a month after the trick was first made available to the WhatsApp users on Android, the transgender pride emoji has made its way to the WhatsApp keyboard and it can now be used simply by tapping on the icon like the other flags. The update comes as a part of WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.19.73. This means that all the Android users who have the latest beta version of the app running on their smartphones can use this emoji. However, the users who are using the main version of the app, will have to wait for some time till the emoji is released on to the main version of the app.
Apart from the transgender pride flag, there are a bunch of other emojis available on WhatsApp that can be used to represent other genders. These emojis, as was the case with the transgender pride emoji earlier, remain hidden within the app as of now and there is no word on whether or not WhatsApp intends to make them public. Take a look at these emojis:
Meanwhile, WhatsApp in a bid to combat fake news is also planning to introduce a Search by Image feature on to its platform that would enable users to search for an image on the web that they have either sent or received in their chats. This, in turn, would allow them to check if the image is real or a fake one. This feature, however, is still under development.

Google is rolling out advanced AR effects to YouTube Stories

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat already support AR filters for Stories on their platforms.
  • YouTube launched the Stories feature last year but only to prominent creators.
  • YouTube Stories will now allow you to add animated masks, glasses, 3D hats and more to your selfies.
Stories is one of the most widely used features these days. Facebook, Snapchat, WhatsApp and Instagram are the some of the popular platforms offering this feature. In fact Instagram Stories now has 400 million daily active users. The immense popularity of the feature has pushed various other companies to bring in this feature to their platforms including YouTube.
YouTube rolled out its Reels feature last year and now it wants to make it stand out of the crowd by adding advanced AR effect tools to it.
"To make all this possible, we employ machine learning (ML) to infer approximate 3D surface geometry to enable visual effects and ML Pipeline for Selfie AR," Artsiom Ablavatski and Ivan Grishchenko, Research Engineers, Google Artificial Intelligence (AI), wrote in a blog post on Friday.
According to the blog post, Google will use improved "anchoring" process with the new AR effects to make them look more real and responsive. The company says that it uses a unique set of technologies "that can track the highly dynamic surface geometry across every smile, frown or smirk."
" To make all this possible, we employ machine learning (ML) to infer approximate 3D surface geometry to enable visual effects, requiring only a single camera input without the need for a dedicated depth sensor. This approach provides the use of AR effects at realtime speeds, using TensorFlow Lite for mobile CPU inference or its new mobile GPU functionality where available. This technology is the same as what powers YouTube Stories' new creator effects, and is also available to the broader developer community via the latest ARCore SDK release and the ML Kit Face Contour Detection API."
YouTube Stories hasn't been rolled out to everyone yet so it is yet to be seen how exactly will the Google's new AR effects change Stories. Google says that it will enable you to add animated masks, glasses, 3D hats and more to your selfies.
Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat already support AR filters for Stories on their platforms. YouTube launched the Stories feature last year but only to prominent creators. Much like the Stories in other apps, you can add text, music, filters, stickers, and more to your YouTube story. To create a story, open the YouTube mobile app, tap on the video camera icon, and select "Create Story."
